Ride Report – South Mtn – Oct 8 2011: Today we had 12 ATV’ers show up for what turned out to be some of the best riding conditions you could ask for! Thanks to the rain we had earlier in the week we had no dust and in the higher elevations anywhere from 1 inch blankets to 1 foot drifts of fresh snow and as the ride leader I had the privilege to be the first through making it all the more satisfying to me!! The Aspen trees were turning gold and dropping their leaves on the trails and along the creek making for some scenery deserving of a ‘Bob Ross’ painting. We had cool temps and the steam coming off the creek made for an impressive view going up along Williams Creek towards our first destination of South Mountain lookout. Near the lookout a few of our riders had the opportunity to get stuck in the snow for the first time this year when attempting to climb a steeper trail to the lookout; everyone else took an easier route. 🙂 You should have been there to see it in person but the hoarfrost on the communication tower was wicked cool! We stopped for lunch at Riley’s Gulch and enjoyed some sunshine and watching the brook trout in the creek. After lunch we went up to a private property fence-line near Indian Meadows and talked about what the members knew about the history then traveled to the Wilderness Boundary near Nip & Tuck Creek, then continued our ride along Corral Creek which again paralleled the Wilderness Boundary for some impressive views of Juniper Mtn and the Owyhee River Canyon. We all safely made it back to the trucks at 4:30pm after approx 70 miles of riding. Travis Tyson, 2CATV Ride Leader/President
